Equine Rehabilitation Therapy for CERT PT’s & CERA

Arlene White, PT M. Anim. St. (Physiotherapy), Instructor

Offered to: Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants, Veterinary Technicians, and Bs Equine Science Graduates for ARI Certification. Other allied health professionals will be considered for certification on a case by case basis. Call ARI 561-790-1020 for more information.

Courses are a series of online lessons and exams along with a 6 day live lab (location & dates available on the course calendar).

Course Description — The purpose of this course is to provide participants with a fundamental understanding of the anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and gait patterns of the horse. Students will be introduced to the core concepts of evidence based physiotherapy including, musculoskeletal and soft tissue palpation, range of motion testing, manual therapies, and modalities applied during equine rehabilitation. Business aspects focusing on start up of an Equine Rehabilitation business and providing documentation using objective measurements will be emphasized. The skills learned in this course will allow graduates to bring benefit to horses, their owners and their veterinarians.

Attendance Details: PT's, PTA's Veterinary Technicians, Bs Equine Science Graduates must take all online courses and attend the 6 day lab.

Learning Objectives:

Describe basic anatomical similarities and differences between humans and equines.
Identify relevant musculoskeletal structures: bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons, cartilage etc.
Review equine anatomy: origin, insertion, and action of muscles, tendons, & ligaments.
Review palpation of the relevant structures via video
Describe the biomechanics of joint motion, muscle action, and common injuries in the equine.
Discuss structural and functional relationships.
Assess gait abnormalities.
Recognize normal gait variables
Introduction to physical rehabilitation and evidence based medicine.
Introduction to manual therapy including mobilization of soft tissue and fascia.
Introduction and theory of the proprioceptive system & neuromotor control.
Introduction to therapeutic exercise
Use of modalities in equine rehabilitation including; ultrasound, laser, thermal agents, and
electro-therapy.
Discuss the unique features of a rehabilitation business including documentation and team
approach.

6 Day Live Lab: Practice of all above topics on live subjects. See course calendar for dates and locations of the Introduction to Equine Rehabilitation Live Lab

Equine Athletics Module RACE

Course Description: The purpose of this 13 lecture series of courses is to provide participants with a fundamental understanding of equine  key concepts regarding the relationships between conformation, locomotion and performance, development of sport specific conditioning programs and detection of lameness, current regenerative therapies, musculoskeletal disorders and neurological disorders will be covered.  A two part series on equine bone strength and mineral nutrition and equine aquatic therapy is also included.  Lecturer's included in this series are: Dr. Hilary Clayton, Dr. Melissa King, Dr. Anna Firshman, & Dr. Brian Nielsen. Race Approved for 10.25 ceu's

Learning Objectives:
Understand recent Veterinary treatment options available for orthopedic and musculoskeletal injuries.
Understand the functions of the spine, front limbs, hind limbs and hooves in relation to equine performance.
Recognize and evaluate horses moving at the basic gaits (walk, trot, canter, gallop), recognize common abnormalities and lameness of these gaits and understand components of a lameness evaluation. Equine aquatic therapy parameters will be reviewed and support for using aquatic therapy as a rehabilitation tool will be presented.
Provide a fundamental review of clinical neuromuscular physiology and anatomy as they pertain to the horse.
Recognize commonly seen equine Neurologic and muscular diseases and their veterinary management especially as they relate to rehabilitation. Watch a video of neurologic examination techniques in a laboratory setting.
Become familiar with the terminology, techniques and current research in equine locomotion analysis. Limb kinematics and the interaction between the hoof and the ground, kinetic concepts of mass, weight, inertia, momentum and force, and more specifically the effects of ground reaction force.  Describe temporal and linear kinematic variables together with limb coordination patterns that are commonly used by the horse.   Mineral nutrition of the equine athlete and factors that influence bone strength are also covered.

Part 1.  Introduction to Equine Rehabilitation begins with a series of online lectures in equine anatomy and physiology, musculoskeletal palpation, biomechanics, conformation and postural evaluation of the horse.  Core concepts of physiology, neurology, basic gait assessment; including normal vs abnormal gait patterns will be introduced.  Students will be introduced to the principals and theory behind equine physical rehabilitation. Treatment techniques will be introduced for soft tissue, joint range of motion, retraining the proprioceptive and neuromotor control along with introduction & progression of therapeutic exercise and the use of therapeutic modalities: (ice/heat, compression garments, electromagnetics, laser/LED, therapeutic ultrasound, electromodalities TENS, FES, NMES).  Documenting objective outcomes and measures during your treatment, team communication & business aspects of working in the equine rehabilitation field.  After completing the online course work students attend a 6 day live lab practical session (see course calendar for dates & locations)

Part 2. Equine Athletics is a series of 12 online lectures from the experts in their field.  Dr. Hilary Clayton offers a 3 part lecture on locomotor biomechanics.  Dr. Melissa King lectures on equine aquatic therapy, regenerative medicine, and muscluoskeletal lameness.  Dr. Anna Firshman presents 2- two part lectures the first one on equine neurological disease and the second one on equine muscle disease.  Dr. Brian Nielsen talks include a 2 part lecture on equine bone strength and one lecture on mineral nutrition of the equine athlete.   Short 5 question examinations are located at the end of each lecture 80% passing grade is required.

Case Study Submission - Students will upload a case study for review

Live Labs will be offered at ARI - Palm Beach County FL
