This Certification program in Equine Kinesiology Taping is offered to : Veterinarians (including students in their final year of school) Animal Physical Therapists, Physical Therapists with education in equine anatomy, Veterinary Technicians & Physical Therapist Assistants that have completed the CERA Certificate program, Equine Chiropractors, Equine Osteopaths. Certified Equine Massage Therapists that meet minimum requirements (check with ARI for eligibility).

CEKTT includes 7 online modules and a 2 day live lab. The aim of this course is to provide participants with the knowledge and practical skills to properly use kinesiology taping techniques within their everyday practice to benefit their equine patient. Following an introduction on the history and general characteristics of the tape, a comparison between the different elastic tapes available on the market will be demonstrated. This will allow students to understand the differences and acquire the knowledge to decide which tape is best suited for the chosen application.

The basics of physiological action of the tape on the different body systems will be explained before introducing specific applications for muscles, tendon, ligaments, joints, lymphatic and neurological systems. While teaching the different possible therapeutic applications of the tape, the instructor will teach the basic clinical reasoning skills for a more effective use of kinesiology taping in the horse. During the Live Lab proper tension in the application of the tape will be demonstrated and practiced along with the correct anatomical placement of the tape. The instructor will guide the students in this proper application which is critical for the tapes effectiveness.

Learning Objectives:

Each student will be able to demonstrate the ability to properly apply the tape for different types of conditions. You will be able to perform a complete clinical reasoning progression through the choice of tape and application of tape for treatment of specific conditions and cases.

Module 1: History & comparison between tapes, physiological basis of action, review of assessment basics and potential use of taping in practice. Participants will learn about the history of the tape, its general characteristics and the differences between the major tapes available on the market. The physiological basis of action of the tape on the different body systems will be reviewed as a reminder of all the steps needed for proper use of the tape together with an overview of all the potential areas of application in equine practice.

Module 2: Review of the basics of proprioception and neuromotor control , taping applications for muscles, ligaments, joints and neurological systems. Application techniques taught for muscle facilitation and inhibition, tendon, ligament and joint support, and neurological conditions.

Module 3: Taping for fascia, posture and function - Review of anatomy, physiology, recent research and knowledge on fascia. Application techniques for the treatment of fascia with kinesiology tape. Use of taping to address posture and functional conditions.

Module 4: Interstitial space, lymphatic system and pain control. This module focuses on edema and lymphatic issues that are common and often the cause of movement restriction and pain. You will learn the application techniques for decompression of tissue, pain relief and lymphatic conditions.

Module 5: Fibrosis and Scars: This module investigates areas of fibrosis and scars that can create restriction of movement and pain, impair a horse's performance and be the cause of injury or re-injury. You will learn taping applications to effectively treat fibrosis and scars.

Module 6: Specific Clinical Scenarios: Module 6 in this series gives you some treatment options for specific clinical conditions to help guide you in choosing the best taping treatment strategy. Some relevant clinical cases presented in the Certification Final Examination will be added to this module and be available in a dropbox folder to help create a database of clinical applications.

Module 7: Literature Review:  A literature review of the current human/equine kinesiology tape applications will be presented in the last lecture.

There is a 2 day live lab that accompanies this Certification program. You can register for Lab once you have completed the online lecture series and passed all exams.  Live labs will be offered throughout the year in up to three locations.  Two in the USA; Florida and Colorado, and also one in Italy. See the course calendar for Lab locations and dates.

Live Lab : (day 1) Taping applications for muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and neurological conditions

Review of theory of Kinesiology tape for the conditions listed above (Classroom)

CERTIFICATION PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS:

In order to gain the CEKTT (Certified Equine Kinesiology Taping Therapist)  applicants will need to take all 7 online modules, pass all examinations, attend the 2 day live lab, and submit a case study for review. Each module in the series has a short examination which requires a 70% passing grade before moving onto the next module in the series. Students will also upload a case study to the site for review by the instructor.
